Sunrise from the Top of the Mountain

The sun breaks over a summit in Fujishima Takeji's Sunrise from the Top of the Mountain, its first light spilling across ridgelines that still hold the blue of night. Below the burning disc, slopes shift through violet shadow into pale gold, each crest edged in vermilion where the light strikes. Fujishima Takeji paints in the western manner he helped bring to Japan, laying oil color in broad, luminous planes so the sky reads almost molten against the cooled darkness of the valleys. Thin mist pools between peaks. A study or stairwell benefits from that kind of radiance, something vertical and quiet that carries the cold air of altitude into a warm interior.
