Sunrise at Toba

The first light of day burns over Toba bay in Sunrise at Toba, a seascape by Fujishima Takeji. The horizon glows amber while the water below stays cold and steel blue. Toba itself sits low along the shore, rendered in small, dark strokes of indigo and umber, rooftops and masts pressed into a strip of land. Above it, Takeji loads the sky with thick, warm paint, yellows bleeding into rose where the sun breaks through morning cloud. Brushwork in the water runs horizontal and loose, catching flecks of gold on the swell. A work of Japanese yoga painting with a strong western light sensibility, it suits a quiet study or a hallway that faces east.
