Dawn breaks over Kobe harbor in Fujishima Takeji Sunrise at the Port of Kobe, where masts and smokestacks rise in silhouette against a sky still burning with the first red of morning. The water carries that light in long, broken reflections, salmon and violet rippling between hulls and moored barges. Takeji painted in the yoga manner, applying oil pigments with a western sense of atmosphere while keeping the restraint of Japanese composition: the horizon sits low, the sky claims most of the field, and the harbor itself is reduced to dark, confident strokes. Steam thins above the rooftops, gulls hang motionless, and the whole scene holds the hush of a city not yet awake. A study or dining room gains a quiet focal point from this coastal morning.
