Sunny Farm

Thatched rooftops blaze under a noon sky in this farmyard scene by Firmin Baes. Hens scratch near a wooden cart, and a whitewashed wall throws back the glare of a Flemish summer. Baes worked in pastel, and the technique shows in every sun-bleached surface: golden ochre laid over chalky ground, soft haze where dust rises from the yard, crisp strokes defining the gable edges. The light does the heavy lifting, warm and unrelenting. Suited to a kitchen, a breakfast room, or any corner that could use the honest warmth of the countryside.
