Sunlit Landscape of Cape Shio

Cape Shio juts into bright open water, headland rendered in thick strokes of olive and burnt gold. Fujishima Takeji paints the Japanese coast at full noon, when shadow contracts to almost nothing and every surface seems to hold heat. Pale sky presses down on the promontory, its rocky flank broken by scrub and sun-bleached grass. The sea beyond shifts from milky turquoise near shore to a deeper cobalt band at the horizon, painted wet-into-wet so the two blues bleed together. Light is the true subject here, pooled on the cape and scattered across the water in short broken dabs. A study or sunroom suits it well, somewhere morning glare and quiet reading coexist.
