Sunflower

A single sunflower fills the picture, its heavy head turned toward the viewer and its leaves curling against a compressed ground of dark greens and yellows. Segal reduces the bloom to bold, blocky shapes, the petals laid down in short, deliberate strokes of chrome yellow and deep ochre. Brushwork stays visible everywhere, ridged in the seed head, loose at the stem. The color leans warm but never sweet, the background pulled down into umber so the flower reads almost sculptural. A strong choice for a kitchen corner, a sunlit breakfast nook, or a reading nook that wants a hit of summer.
