Sunderland Harbour

Masts and rigging crowd the harbour mouth at Sunderland, drawn in fine ink lines over soft washes of grey and blue. Louis Hubbard Grimshaw captures the busy Tyne and Wear port at working light. Low clouds press down on the river, their undersides picked out in cool grey, while the water below carries broken reflections of hulls and dockside buildings. Small fishing boats rest at their moorings against the darker mass of larger vessels, and the quays recede in careful perspective toward a hazy horizon.
