Summer

Tall sunflowers lean against a whitewashed wall in Summer, a landscape by Ukrainian painter Trush Ivan Ivanovych. Heavy flower heads nod in the heat, their golden faces turned toward a pale summer sky that washes the horizon in haze. Behind the flowers, a country fence runs at a slight angle, built from rough grey-brown planks that catch the noon light on one edge and fall into warm shadow on the other. Thick brushwork builds up the petals and leaves in layers of ochre, sap green and deep umber, while dry grass at the base flickers with quick, broken strokes of yellow. A quiet corner of a kitchen or sunroom suits this warm rural scene well.
