Summer

Meadow grass runs thick and loose across the foreground, brushed in strokes of sap green and butter yellow. Summer by Swiss painter Cuno Amiet gathers a hillside at the height of the season, when every blade seems to lean toward the sun. Look closer and the structure appears: short, loaded dabs of chrome green stacked against warm ochre, a scatter of red and white flecks where wildflowers catch the light, sky pressed down in flat, confident bands of blue. Amiet built the scene from pure color rather than outline, letting adjacent tones do all the drawing. The brushwork stays visible everywhere, ridged and unhurried. A sunroom or breakfast nook with pale linen and raw wood suits its open-air warmth.
