Sukhumi

Sukhumi spreads along its bay in this work by Ivan Vladimirov, the Black Sea town rendered as a working panorama of masts, rooftops and shoreline. The city itself is the subject, not a backdrop. Vladimirov builds the harbour in layered greys and sun-bleached ochres, ships at anchor casting short dark reflections on the water. Cypress spires and pale facades climb the hillside behind the quay, brushwork loose in the foreground, tightening along the architecture. Figures scatter the embankment in small, sure strokes. It reads naturally above a desk or in a hallway where a window view of sea and sky would feel at home.
