Sudak. Mulberry

A gnarled mulberry fills the foreground, crown heavy with summer leaf. Sudak. Mulberry is Pyotr Konchalovsky at his most physical, paint pushed on thick to catch the heat of a Crimean hillside. Loaded brushwork builds the foliage, dabs of sap green and olive pressed over a hot ground of rose and cream. The trunk turns sculptural, blue grey shadow down one flank, sunlight breaking along the upper branches. Pale walls and low outbuildings slip in and out of the greenery behind. It asks for a study or a sunlit reading nook, where dense green can sit against pale plaster, linen, and unpolished wood.
