Study

Dense summer foliage crowds the small panel, leaves built up in fat strokes of emerald and ochre over a warm russet ground. Pyotr Konchalovsky, Russian post impressionist, titled it plainly: Study. Oil paint sits thick, ridges catching light along each leaf cluster, while thinner passages let the underpaint glow between boughs. Shadow runs violet against lit green. A dry branch crosses the upper corner, dark and calligraphic. Nothing is polished; every stroke stays where the brush left it. Hang it where daylight moves, in a reading nook or beside a hallway window, anywhere that rewards leaning close to trace each brushstroke.
