Study

A garden corner assembled in a dozen loaded strokes: foliage blocked in wet against wet, a path suggested, sky left nearly bare. Konchalovsky titled it simply Study, true to the Russian habit of working fast and looking hard. Oil paint sits thick where the brush pressed, thin where it skated, pale priming showing through at the edges. Unmixed viridian collides with a slab of ochre; white highlights ride on top, still holding the shape of bristles. Pure post impressionist shorthand. Set in a reading nook or along a hallway, its quick notation of color loosens a room the way an open window does in early summer.
