Study of Torso

A bare torso turns in half light, drawn in quick, searching strokes. Nicholas Roerich titled the work simply Study of torso, and that plainness suits the object it records. The body reads as weathered stone, chin and collarbone modeled in soft sepia against a pale ground. Shadows pool under the pectorals, hatching following the muscle grain. Warm ochre washes the ribs; the head dissolves unfinished at the neck. Classicists and draftsmen alike will read the discipline in it. A study wall, an atelier corner, a dim hallway beside a stair: places where a fragment of the human form keeps its quiet authority.
