Snow lies over the whole stage in this study of scene design for Snow Maiden by Nicholas Roerich. A white winter world, drawn for theater. Roerich blocks out the setting in loose washes of blue and grey, the drifts piled against bare forms at the edges. The sky holds a pale, cold light. Crosshatched shadows anchor the snowbanks, and the composition opens toward a distant treeline rendered in a few decisive strokes of the brush.
