Study of Mountains

Ridges climb in stacked planes, each slope a deeper cobalt than the one before. Study of mountains finds the Russian painter Nicholas Roerich at his most direct, pinning down alpine form before the light could change. The surface reads as matte tempera, chalky where snow sits, thin along the ridgelines where the ground breathes through. Violet shadow pools in the couloirs while summits hold a near-white that never grays. One loaded stroke carries a whole face of rock. It belongs above a writing desk or beside a reading chair, in whichever quiet corner calls for the cold clarity of high country.
