Study of Mountains

Peaks rise in stacked planes of violet and slate, each ridge cooler than the one before it. Nicholas Roerich built this study of mountains from broad, flat passes of tempera, letting pigment sit in layers like snowpack on stone. Look closely and the brushwork stays visible: dry, dragged strokes over the upper faces, deeper shadow pooled where two slopes meet. The sky reads as a single wash, thin at the horizon, deepening toward cobalt overhead. Nothing is fussily detailed. Distance is carried entirely by color, cooled ridge by ridge until the farthest summits nearly dissolve into air. A study or hallway gains a quiet center of gravity from an image this vertical and still.
