Study of Mountains

Peaks rise in frozen bands of color, ridge behind ridge, each one paler than the last until snow and sky become the same hue. This is Study of Mountains, Nicholas Roerich at his most distilled. Tempera lays the massif down in clean planes: violet shadow in the folds, cold white along the crests, a band of deep blue holding the summits against the air. The brushwork stays broad and declarative. Nothing is fussy. The mountains keep the geometry of raw rock while the thin, high atmosphere simplifies them into near-abstraction, the way distance does at altitude. A quiet study, a reading nook, a hallway with low light, all give these summits room to recede the way Roerich intended.
