Study of Mountains

Peaks rise in stacked planes, one behind another, until the farthest dissolve into cold pale air. Nicholas Roerich titled the work simply, Study of Mountains, and the plainness suits it. Blues carry the weight here. Broad washes of cobalt and slate build the nearest ridges, while lighter, almost milky tones push the summits back into haze. The brushwork is quick and unforced, a working hand testing how far a single ridge can recede before it vanishes. Snow caps read as small pale accents against the darker slopes. A study like this belongs where thought happens: a study, a hallway, the wall above a desk where the eye needs somewhere distant to rest.
