Study of Mountains

Jagged summits crowd the frame in this study of mountains by Nicholas Roerich, a working sketch where blue peaks rise one behind another into cold, thinning air. Nothing here is finished for show; it is the mountain itself, caught mid-thought. Broad washes of cobalt and slate lay down the near ridges, while paler violet tones recede toward a snow line drawn in a few quick strokes. The brushwork stays loose and searching, every slope carrying visible direction, the sky left open and luminous above the highest crest. Roerich built whole Himalayan series from notes like this. It belongs above a desk or in a quiet reading corner, anywhere that rewards a long, steady look at high places.
