About this work

Study of Mountains

Peaks crowd the picture plane, ridge stacked behind ridge in bands of cool slate and snow. Study of mountains belongs to the Nicholas Roerich vision of the high Himalayas, where rock itself becomes the subject. Look closely and the handling carries everything: broad planes of tempera blue laid over darker underpainting, white laid in with a dry brush so summits appear chiseled rather than painted. Shadowed faces sink toward violet and near-black, while lit slopes stay cold, almost glacial. Nothing softens the edges of the stone. A study this austere asks for quiet company, a hallway or reading room with plain walls and low light, where the ridgeline can hold the eye alone.
