Study of Landscape

Hills fold into one another under a wide, pale sky, the whole sweep of land caught in a quick, searching sketch. This study of landscape belongs to Nicholas Roerich, the Russian painter who treated terrain as something alive and breathing. Loose strokes build the ridgelines in muted greens and dusty blues, each hill given its own weight. Light lies flat across the middle distance, the way it does just before evening settles. Shadows pool thinly in the hollows, and the foreground stays open, unpainted in places, so the ground seems to emerge from bare paper. A study like this suits a quiet study or reading room, somewhere the eye can wander.
