Study of Hands

Fingers curl, stretch, and fold over one another in ink lines that trace every tendon. Durer filled these study sheets with hands in every attitude: clasped, open, resting palm up, knuckles shaded in fine parallel hatching. Pen strokes build the form in layers, crosshatching darkening where the tendons rise along the back of each hand. The knuckles bulge, the skin wrinkles at each joint, and soft wash settles into the hollows between fingers. Nothing is finished here and everything is observed, each contour the record of a working draughtsman testing his eye. A drawing this honest belongs in a study or reading room, close at hand where the detail can be examined at leisure.
