Study of Flowers

Flower heads open in tempera, petals drawn with the firm contour Nicholas Roerich brought to all his botanical studies, color laid in flat, unblended fields that hold the light without gloss. Deep violet and cobalt pool in the petal folds while ochre stems carry the eye toward a dark, plain ground. The paint surface reads chalky and matte, brushwork visible at every edge, contours darkened nearly to outline. Each bloom holds a clear, separate shape. A reading nook or sunlit study suits it well; the single floral motif keeps company with linen, wood, and quiet shelves without demanding more attention than the room gives.
