Study of Clouds

Clouds drift across the sheet in loose, searching strokes, the whole page given over to sky. Koloman Moser made this study with the eye of a designer, reducing atmosphere to pattern. Grey masses swell and thin; pale gaps open between them like windows. The graphite moves quickly in places, softening into smudges where light catches the cloud bellies, then sharpens into firmer contour along their undersides. Tonal layering builds real depth: near clouds read heavy and pewter-toned, distant ones dissolve into barely-there wash. Nothing anchors the eye to ground. The sky alone carries the composition. A quiet, meteorological kind of beauty. It suits a hallway or stair landing, somewhere the glance lifts upward.
