Study of a Shore

A quiet shoreline unfolds under a pale sky in Study of a shore, a seaside study by Nicholas Roerich. The water lies flat and patient, broken only where low rocks interrupt the tide. Gulls appear as small hooked strokes of white above the horizon. Washes of grey, blue and soft green build the sea in thin, translucent layers, while the foreground beach stays warm and sandy, its texture rough where pigment gathered.
