Study for Storm Tide

Churning surf drives up the beach in Study for Storm Tide, where Robert Henri reduces a rising sea to its essential movement, swell against shore under a burdened sky. Paint sits thick. Broad strokes of slate green and oyster gray build the water; foam breaks across it in single dragged passes of white. Low on the horizon, wet sand catches a dim reflected light, and the swell leans toward the viewer, close enough to taste the spray.
