Studio Interior

A wooden easel stands in the half light, an unfinished still life propped on its ledge, as Samuel Peploe turns the room itself into the subject of Studio Interior. Thick paint sits in ridges of ochre, viridian and lead white. A jug and bowl of fruit hold the table at left, black outlines firming every edge, while a window throws pale glare across worn floorboards and a chair pushed back against the wainscot. It belongs in a reading room or hallway, where ordered furniture and slanting daylight turn a bare stretch of plaster into a working atelier.
