Structure

A lattice of ruled black lines divides the surface into stacked compartments, each holding a sign: fish, sun, anchor, quartered circle. Joaquin Torres Garcia builds his Structure the way a mason builds a wall, course by measured course. The ground glows a warm chalky ochre. Across each cell the hand of the Uruguayan modernist is visible in slightly uneven edges, paint pooled thin in places and dense where two borders meet, the grid breathing rather than mechanical. Letters and pictographs sit side by side like tesserae in a mosaic. Hang it where concentration lives, a study or reading nook, and let the ordered compartments do their quiet arithmetic.
