Street Lamp, Arcueil

A single street lamp rises against a cool suburban sky, the subject of Street Lamp, Arcueil by Albert Marquet. Its dark iron post anchors the composition while pale houses and rooftops recede behind it in thin, level bands of color. Marquet builds the scene from flattened planes of grey, slate blue and dusty rose, the lamp head reduced to a small black silhouette. The road below stays nearly bare, so all weight settles on that slender vertical and the soft atmospheric light around it. Quiet and architectural, it suits a hallway, a home office, or any room that welcomes city scenes with restrained color and clear structure.
