A sunlit highland street climbs gently between whitewashed cottages in this Scottish Colourist painting by Samuel Peploe. Titled Street in Comrie, Perthshire, it catches a Perthshire village on a bright afternoon. Rooftops tilt under heavy slate, chimneys stack in blocks of grey, and a strong sun drops hard shadows across the road. Peploe builds the scene in thick, deliberate strokes: greens and mauves jostle in the foliage, and the pale walls carry flashes of ochre and blue.
