Stream

A narrow stream winds through undergrowth, its surface broken by pale reflections. Somov titled the work simply Stream, letting the water itself carry the scene. Thin birch trunks rise along the banks, their bark rendered in quick grey strokes. Ferns and low grasses crowd the margins in deep viridian and olive, while dappled light scatters across the current in broken silver flecks. The palette stays cool and muted, typical of Somov and the World of Art circle, where landscape often carries a quiet, private melancholy. A reading nook or study with soft lamplight suits this watercourse scene well.
