Stream in Fading Light

Water runs quiet through the last of the daylight. Stream in Fading Light by Louis Aston Knight follows a narrow channel as it slides past grassy banks, the surface catching the day in thin silver strokes. Knight built his reputation on rivers exactly like this one, painted with the patient eye of a son of Barbizon tradition. Look closely and the handling shows itself: soft olive greens pressed into the near bank, pale rose and grey washed across the water where the sun has dropped low, tree trunks drawn in quick dark calligraphy at the edge. Reflections do half the work here, blurring the far trees into the current until bank and water nearly merge. A study, a hallway, or a reading nook with a north window all suit its hushed evening air.
