Stormy Weather, Iona

A storm shoulders in over Iona. Samuel Peploe paints the island under low, bruised cloud, the sea churned white against dark rocks, the whole canvas tilting with wind. The water runs from deep viridian to slate, broken by thick strokes of cream where waves strike the shore. Rocks in violet grey and cold umber anchor the foreground, applied in loaded, angular impasto. Sky and sea meet in a single restless band of leaden blue. Suited to a stairwell or a study, anywhere a rough sea reads right against plain walls.
