Stormy Day on the Kama

Rain sweeps across the wide Kama in long grey sheets, and the river answers with whitecaps. This Russian landscape by Arkady Rylov is built on wind and water in motion. Cloud banks press low, painted in heavy leaden greys that thin to pale silver along the horizon. The water itself carries the drama: dark blue-green swells broken by streaks of foam, brushwork loose and quick where gusts rake the surface. A distant bank of trees bends under the weather, barely holding its green against the storm light. A study or library wall suits its northern temperament, where the cool palette reads calm rather than bleak.
