A stone bridge spans a fast-moving river while storm clouds mass above it. That is the scene Winston Churchill set down in Storm over a Bridge in Southern France, painted during one of his holidays in the Midi. The sky carries the weight here: bruised greys and violet-blues dragged across the upper canvas in broad, loaded strokes. Below, the arches hold their ground against the current, rendered in earthy ochres and umber with quick dabs of white along the water. The brushwork is restless everywhere except on the masonry, which Churchill built up calmly, arch by arch.
