Still Life with Vegetables

Cabbages, leeks and gourds lie heaped across the table in this modernist still life by Arthur Segal. The subject is humble produce, treated with the seriousness of portraiture. Segal builds the picture from blocky planes of cabbage green, beet purple and ochre, the paint applied in deliberate patches that flatten depth into pattern. Brushwork shows plainly in the ridges of each leaf. Shadows fall as clean geometric wedges beneath the vegetables, a signature move of his modernist practice. It sits naturally in a kitchen, a dining room, or above a sideboard where honest food and honest painting belong together.
