Still Life with Tulips

Tulips crowd a squat ceramic jug, stems bowing every direction at once. Samuel Peploe built Still Life with Tulips from thick impasto and hard black contours, the handling that made his flower paintings famous. Scarlet and cream petals flare against flat blocks of background colour, every leaf picked out with a dark edge. The table tilts toward the viewer, its cloth draped in deep folds, brushwork laid on thick enough to cast its own shadow. Give it a breakfast nook or a sunlit kitchen, somewhere fresh flowers already gather each week; these will never need water.
