Still Life with Tulips

Tulips in full bloom dominate the composition, their red and pink heads tipping over a white cloth. This still life by Samuel Peploe of the Scottish Colourists turns a simple table into a study of saturated color. The blooms press upward, crowded and heavy with color, some petals edging toward violet where the shadow catches them. Around the flowers sit the supporting cast: a small bowl, scattered fruit, and folds of drapery laid in with broad, confident strokes of cobalt and emerald. The background stays dark and flat, pushing every petal forward so the reds burn against it. Best placed in a dining room or a reading nook where color carries the light.
