Still Life with Sugar Bowl and Hyacinth in a Glass

Blue hyacinth bells crowd above a lidded sugar bowl on a dark tabletop. Paula Modersohn-Becker painted the still life with the thick, patient brushwork of her Worpswede years. The bulb roots in a flared glass of water, pale threads visible through the curve. Nothing stirs. Beside it the porcelain carries a smooth glazed sheen, its knop one small bead of shadow. Around both, umber and olive sink backward, so the white form and cool petals hold all the light. A breakfast nook, a north-lit kitchen, a hallway shelf: anywhere tea is poured slowly, the picture settles in and keeps its hush.
