Still Life with Statuette and Books

A small carved statuette stands on a tabletop beside a stack of books, and Samuel Peploe builds the whole scene from that quiet pairing. Still Life with Statuette and Books turns ordinary studio props into a composition of strong planes and deliberate color. The figure reads as pale stone against a deep ground, its silhouette picked out in firm, dark outline. Book spines and board edges create blocks of rust, green and black, while the table surface tilts forward in the flat, assertive way of the Scottish Colourists.
