Still Life with Roses

Roses lie open on a pale tabletop, petals loosening at the edges while a low vase holds the rest of the stems upright. Peploe builds the arrangement from thick oil paint, each bloom blocked in with cream, shell pink and a sudden flare of vermilion at the heart. Behind them a cool blue ground flattens into shadow, so the flowers read almost sculptural, cut out against the colour. Leaves flicker in yellow-green between the heads. A sunlit dining room or a reading nook with linen curtains would carry this kind of colour well, anywhere morning light can meet the pinks.
