Still Life with Roses in a Chinese Vase

Roses balance against porcelain. Peploe stacks his still life tight and high, blooms tumbling over the lip of a Chinese vase whose glaze shifts from deep blue to milky white. The petals are loaded paint, pink and cream applied thick, each flower given its own weight. The blue of the vase carries everything around it. Against that cobalt ground the reds burn hotter, and the leaves go almost black where shadow pools beneath the stems. Brushwork stays visible throughout, short and decisive, the kind that leaves no room for correction. A pale cloth anchors the group, its folds worked in cool greys. Suits a dining room or a hallway where a burst of colour earns its place.
