Still Life with Roses and Mirror

Roses hold the foreground while a mirror opens the picture behind them. Samuel Peploe built this still life in thick, deliberate oil strokes, each petal laid down with a loaded brush and left alone. The blooms sit in pale pinks and whites against a deep ground, and the mirror doubles the composition, catching a sliver of reflected wall and window light. Brushwork stays visible everywhere, ridges of paint along leaf edges, crosshatched shadow under the table rim, a cool grey pane where the glass meets its frame. A parlor, dressing room, or quiet corner of a bedroom suits its intimate scale and doubled view.
