Still Life with Red Gladioli

Scarlet gladiolus spikes climb the full height of the picture, blooms stacked like flame along green stems, the still life Pyotr Konchalovsky titled Still Life with Red Gladioli. Paint sits thick on the surface, impasto ridges catching light along each petal, crimson deepening to wine at the flower throats. A rounded earthenware jug holds the stems, blue-grey against a table tipped toward the viewer, spear-shaped leaves cut in flat sage green.
