Still Life with Red Flowers

Red flowers burn at the center of Still Life with Red Flowers by the Romanian painter Theodor Pallady. Vermilion and carmine petals carry the whole composition. Oil color sits thick on the surface, each petal turned with a few loaded strokes rather than carefully drawn. Stems cross at odd angles inside the dark vase, leaves in deep green catching the light. Around them the background stays muted, warm brown and gray, so the color does all the talking. Set it in a dining room or study, where the concentrated red reads as warmth across a table without ever turning sweet.
