Still Life with Radishes

Radishes spill across a worn tabletop, crimson bulbs and long white tips still crowned with leafy green. Maurice Louis Monnot gives the humble vegetable full attention in Still Life with Radishes. Oil paint sits thick on the red skins, each highlight dabbed in wet impasto, while the greens are worked looser, almost scrubbed in. A dull pewter plate and a small knife anchor the group, and the background falls into deep brown shadow.
