Still Life with Pumpkin

A ribbed pumpkin dominates the tabletop, its orange segments swelling against a dark ground. Still Life with Pumpkin shows Paula Modersohn-Becker treating humble kitchen produce with sculptural weight. Thick brushwork builds the ridged skin in burnt orange and ochre. Deep green and violet brown pool in every groove. Beside it rest a pale ceramic jug and a few dim apples, their silhouettes pressed forward by heavy contour. A kitchen suits it best, though a study shelf or a dining room corner works too, anywhere copper pots and pale timber already set the tone.
