Still Life with Plate and Apples

A white plate holds its ground in the center of the canvas, apples crowded against it in reds and greens that lean toward the viewer. Still Life with Plate and Apples is Harry Phelan Gibb at his most direct. Paint in thick, deliberate strokes builds the fruit into almost sculptural forms. The blue shadows beneath the plate, the bruised purple on one apple skin, the table edge cutting across in dark ochre: nothing is smoothed over. Cezanne taught him this kind of patience, and Gibb carried it into a palette all his own. A dining room or kitchen with plain plaster walls gives these apples the light they ask for.
