Still Life with Pink and Red Roses in a Chinese Vase

Pink and red roses crowd a Chinese vase in this still life by Samuel Peploe, petals tumbling over the rim in loose, loaded strokes. The blooms are the whole argument of the picture, massed thick against a quieter ground. Peploe builds the flowers from pure dabs of crimson, rose madder and shell pink, each petal turned with a single confident touch of the brush. The vase carries its own colour story, blue and white glaze patterned in the manner of Chinese export porcelain, its curved silhouette giving the loose bouquet a firm architectural base. Deep greens of stems and leaves cut across the pinks at sharp diagonals. A dining room or salon with pale walls suits it well.
